Pen or Pencil

Pen and watercolour

2B pencil and watercolour

Two tries at the same subject - lilies growing at the moment in the garden.

I said I'd practise sketching with a pen but I don't find it easy. I can't quite work out why I find it so uncomfortable - it just seems to lack the softness of a pencil. I enjoy the way a pencil mark varies in tone depending on the pressure you apply as compared to a pen which seems to lack that variation.

Then, of course, you can't rub out a pen line !!

  2. I totally agree with your comments about using a pen! I am also in agreement with Robyn in that the pen one here has the edge. However that could be more to do with the composition than the actual use of pen. The use of less leaves gives the pattern across the page much more impact don't you think? It's really lovely - and would look fab as a large canvas....?!! :o)

    1. I think you're right Alison - about the composition. But glad I'm not alone in my opinion of pens. To me it's a bit like playing an electric organ and a piano - though I'm pretty basic at both I can somehow prtray moe feeling with a piano!

  3. I prefer the pen one too - much stronger and vibrant!! Go girl with that pen - "it can't eat you"(used to be my mother's answer to anything I wasn't keen on doing)!!
